Alcoholics, DUI and Treatment

The average first time DUI Offender does not have a problem with alcohol. Many, otherwise law abiding and sober citizens, make a judgement error and get arrested for a DUI after consuming a moderate amount of alcohol. However, I also represent clients who have a significant addiction to alcohol or drugs. Alcohol can destroy lives and getting arrested for a DUI is often a culmination of years of alcohol abuse. I am representing a client at present who has two prior DUI convictions and has just been arrested again with a .35% blood alcohol concentration. She is a danger to herself and to the community and she would be the first to admit this. She has already tried Alcoholics Anonymous and a stay in a residential treatment facility. Unfortunately, she just can't stop drinking.

For some, getting arrested for a DUI is a "wake up call" that prompts a change in lifestyle. Some people actually look back on a DUI arrest and are grateful for the event as a catalyst to leading a healthier life. Others need significant prompting and persuasion to get involved in treatment programs or at least AA meetings and working the twelve steps.

Residential treatment programs for DUI Offenders are expensive and unaffordable for some. The cost ranges from $2,500 per month to over $60,000 per month. Medical insurance does not cover the cost of residential treatment. Some insurance companies have their own out patient treatment programs for a short period of time, such as Kaiser.

Salvation Army has a six month residential program that is free. However, the program is Christian based, and requires daily work for the Salvation Army. It is a regimented and tough program. For those who are able to complete it, it can be a life saver. I have had a number of clients who have changed their lives through the Salvation Army Program.

If you or a loved one has a problem with alcohol, is facing a DUI prosecution and needs guidance with treatment, please contact Los Angeles and Orange County DUI Lawyers, Gold and Witham for a free consultation.
