Court Closures in Los Angeles

Ten regional courts in Los Angeles are due to close because of a lack of government funds to keep them open. The cuts are expected to delay jury trials, result in longer lines and lead to layoffs. Some landmark courthouses are facing closure including Beverly Hills, Malibu, Whittier and Pomona. Criminal cases from these courts will be reassigned to other courts leading to longer commutes for staff, jurors, witnesses and defendants. The closures are expected to take place over the next eight months.

As a DUI defense lawyer in Los Angeles, these courts hold years of memories of cases lost and won and of the judges, prosecutors and court staff that work in them. It is unclear how many people will lose their jobs as a result of the cuts, but everyone that works in the system performs a valuable service and will be missed if they are lost to the recession. The cuts will create administrative problems that will effect everyone with court business in these areas.

The economic struggles continue to effect us all. Hopefully, with the elections over, the economy will improve in 2013 and we can all get back to business. Many people charged with DUI in Los Angeles over the course of the last three years have chosen to represent themselves and plead guilty to DUI because of a lack of financial ability to hire an experienced Los Angeles dui attorney. It goes without saying that many of these people have been convicted in circumstances where they could have successfully defended the case with proper representation.
