Drunk Driver Injures 13 in Alhambra
Ismael Soto, aged 28 is being held in custody following a traffic collision in Alhambra on Sunday that left thirteen people injured. Mr. Soto allegedly hit two parked vehicles that in turn hit a number of pedestrians who were looking at a holiday lights display.
It is unclear how serious the various injuries were, but bail has been set at $130,000, which is consistent with a serious felony DUI. Soto has a history of driving under the influence of alcohol and his privilege to drive was suspended at the time of the collision.
Although the majority of DUI arrests do not involve traffic collisions, it is incidents like these that are reported in the media and lead to calls for increased penalties. Penalties for DUI seem to increase every year and prosecutors and judges want to be seen to be tough on DUI cases.
People still call me asking whether they need an attorney to defend DUI charges. It comes as a great surprise to some defendants that they may be facing jail time for a DUI. Most people charged with a DUI do not see themselves as "criminals" and are shocked when they are treated like a criminal by the justice system.
