Ignition Interlock Devices and DUI

|

The National Transportation Safety Board has recommended that anyone convicted of a DUI should be required to install in their vehicle an ignition interlock device. NTSB Chairwoman Deborah Hersman said “The first step to address the No. 1 killer on our road-ways is to do what is proven to be effective - use interlocks for all”.

An ignition interlock device prevents an engine from starting if the subject breathes into the device with a measurable amount of alcohol on their breath. Currently 17 states require the device for first time offenders.

Los Angeles County is currently taking part in a DMV pilot program requiring the istallation of an IID in any vehicle owned or operated by a defendant convicted of a first time DUI. Installation is required for a period of five months and allows the licensee unlimited driving privileges. Failure to install the device following a DUI conviction in Los Angeles County will result in an indefinite license suspension.
