Ignition Interlock Device Providers

|
As a result of a change in the law operative July 1, 2010, people convicted of a DUI in Los Angeles will be required to install in their vehicle an ignition interlock device. This device is about the size of a cell phone and is able to measure alcohol on a person's breath. If a driver has a breath alcohol level of over .03%, the device will not allow the driver to start the vehicle.

Courts in Los Angeles County will be providing defendants with a list of approved providers. This list can also be viewed on the DMV's website www.dmv.ca.gov.

Companies providing IID installation include:
Guardian Interlock Systems, (800) 499-0994
Autosense International (800) 325-2656
Lifesafer Interlock, Inc., (800) 210-8087
Consumer Safety Technology, Inc., (877) 777-5020
Smart Start Inc., (800) 880 3394
Alcohol Detection Systems Inc., (800) 786-7394
Alco Alert Interlock, Inc., (888) 663-9847

It remains to be seen how the change in the law will be applied and enforced in practice. However, it is one more hurdle to overcome for those arrested for DUI in Los Angeles and, as defendants will be responsible for the cost, one more expense in an already expensive system.
